LANGUAGE

"The limits of my language mean the limits of my world." (Ludwig Wittgenstein, 1889-1951 Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, 1922)

If you really want to make the most of this experience of a different culture, make an effort to learn the language. Although most Germans, especially the younger ones can communicate in English, you will hear, see and enjoy more if you can at least understand German. And although many Germans are proud of their English language capabilities and are probably happy to try them on you, you will raise in their respect even further when you try to communicate on their terms and they will certainly not mind inevitable mistakes.

One of the most respected and well-known intercultural organizations and language schools in Germany and abroad is the Goethe Institut (http://www.goethe.de). There is an office in every major city but here is the address in Munich:
