EATING AND DRINKING
Germans are very good cooks and bakers. They have a nice variety of fruit and vegetable at hand to prepare tasty meals that can be very different depending on geography.
The typical day consists of a cold breakfast with breads, cold cuts, juice, boiled eggs and fruit. Cereals are getting more common but fried eggs, bacon or even sausage is considered a lunch or dinner dish. The most substantial meal is eaten at lunch and is usually warm. Salad is eaten with the main course, not before. Dinner is similar to the American lunch with a variety of sandwiches -open faced in Germany- salads and light warm sides.
Germans drink juices, soft drinks or "Mineralwasser" (carbonated water) and at dinner beer or wine with their meal. It is still very uncommon to get ice with the drinks and to explain to a waiter, that you just want plain (free) tap water with ice cubes can be quite a challenge.
Germans spend more time in the kitchen themselves. Although they appreciate a good meal in a restaurant, this is often reserved for celebrations or special gatherings.
